On May 20, 1996 the Supreme Court decided Romer v. Evans, voting 6-3 that an amendment to the Colorado Constitution violated the equal protection clause of the 14th Amendment. In 1992, the majority of voters approved the state amendment, which prevented any Colorado city, town or county from enacting laws protecting the rights of homosexuals. The Supreme Court decision is considered a landmark for gay and lesbian civil rights.
