After the Rwandan genocide of 1994, the United Nations established the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda to try responsible parties under international law. On Sept. 2, 1998, Jean-Paul Akayesu was found guilty of nine counts of genocide and war-related crimes against the Tutsi ethnic group. Akayesu was sentenced to life in prison for his role in inciting the systematic torture, rape and killing of several hundred thousand Tutsis.
