On Nov. 22, 1963, President John F. Kennedy was assassinated while riding in a motorcade through downtown Dallas in an open-top convertible. Lee Harvey Oswald allegedly shot 46-year-old Kennedy from the sixth floor of the Texas School Book Depository, then fatally shot a police officer who later questioned him about the assassination. Vice President Lyndon Johnson was sworn in as president just hours later aboard Air Force One in Dallas. Though Oswald was charged Nov. 23 for killing the president and the police officer, he was assassinated the next day by Dallas nightclub owner Jack Ruby.
